Why is it better to convert an existing vehicle to electric, instead of making electric vehicles from scratch? |

Construction of the average automobile requires approximately 30-40 barrels of oil (or equivalent fossil fuels), primarily for powering the manufacturing processes. This is sometimes known as the "embedded energy". So there is a huge resource saving in converting an existing vehicle to electric - particularly vehicles which are becoming uneconomical to maintain as petroleum powered vehicles, and which may otherwise end up on a scrap heap. Electric conversions can give vehicles a new lease on life, and make them more reliable than ever. Think of it like car recycling! |
