Generally, the smaller and lighter the car is, the better. You'll get better performance, more range, and the conversion will cost less. It's a similar story to petrol vehicles, except there is a far greater economic advantage to keeping it small. It also makes sense to convert cars with relatively high mileage or even blown engines, since you can purchase them more cheaply, and greatly extend the useful life of the vehicle. Some examples:
- Practical commuter cars such as the Toyota Echo tend to be light and economical to convert and run.
- Sports cars like our MX5 demo car are light, fun and drive extremely well with electric power. Performance often exceeds the original.
- Vehicles which stop and start a lot, such as delivery vans and taxis, are excellent candidates since an electric drivetrain suffers far less wear and tear.
- Classic car restorations are also a great option, particularly in vehicles where the original internal combustion engine is unserviceable.
