When it comes down to it, the energy source for hybrid vehicles is still nothing but petrol ñ the electric drive system in a hybrid car just serves to improve operating efficiency somewhat. They are actually not that much better than the most efficient petrol-only vehicles. In fact, in most tests the latest turbo diesel vehicles have been shown to be more efficient. Hybrid cars are a step in the right direction, no doubt about that, and will serve to get people used to the idea of having electric motors in their cars. Plug-in hybrid cars are another step in that direction, since for short trips they can operate as zero-emission vehicles, on electric drive alone. It is likely that plug-in hybrid vehicles will become a popular option for people needing to travel long distances, at least until battery technology advances to where it can allow comparable driving range in a pure electric system. |
