At present, few electric vehicles achieve a driving range more than about 200km per charge. Reduced driving range is certainly the primary disadvantage with electric vehicles. Despite the far higher operating efficiencies of electric vehicles, petroleum has a staggering amount of energy in it which far surpasses the energy density of batteries. However plugging an electric vehicle in when you get home is far more convenient than visiting a petrol station, so the important thing is to consider how much range you need for your daily driving. You can use information on our Physics Theory page to predict the driving range for an EV project you may be planning. If you frequently travel more than 100km per day, you may be among 10% of Australians for whom an electric vehicle is not particularly suitable (yet!) |
